Tasklist data files

Tasklist stores your data in Outlook folders, and in data files in the directory on your hard drive where you installed Tasklist.

Your task list is stored in a data file called tasks.bin in your Tasklist directory.  Your individual tasks are stored in your default Outlook Tasks folder.  The tasks.bin data file does not store copies of your Outlook tasks - just a list of them.

Emails associated with your tasks are stored in an Outlook folder called TasklistEmails in your default Outlook folders. Tasklist creates this folder. When you send an email from Tasklist, it goes into your Outlook Sent Items folder in the normal way.  Tasklist makes a copy, which it stores in your TasklistEmails folder.  Tasklist also stores a list of your emails in a data file called emails.bin in your Tasklist directory.  This data file does not contain copies of your emails - just a list of them.  If you delete your TasklistEmails folder, you will lose all the emails stored there.

Notes (Outlook post items) associated with your tasks are stored in an Outlook folder called TasklistNotes in your default Outlook folders.  Tasklist also creates this folder.  Tasklist also stores a list of your notes in a data file called notes.bin in the directory in which you installed Tasklist.  This data file does not contain copies of your notes - just a list of them.  If you delete your TasklistNotes folder, you will lose all the notes stored there.

Contacts and distribution lists associated with your tasks are stored in your default Outlook Contacts folder.  Tasklist also stores a list of your contacts in a data file called contacts.bin, and a list of your distribution lists in a data file called distlists.bin, both in your Tasklist directory.  These data files do not contain copies of your contacts or distribution lists - just a list of them.

Appointments associated with your tasks are stored in your default Outlook Calendar folder.  Tasklist also stores a list of your appointments in a data file called appointments.bin in your Tasklist directory.  This data file does not contain copies of your appointments - just a list of them.

If you want to move your Tasklist data to another computer, you should back up your Outlook personal folders and restore them on your new computer.  You should also copy the tasks.bin, emails.bin, notes.bin, contacts.bin, distlists.bin and appointments.bin files to the directory in which you install Tasklist on your new computer.

Tasklist is installed by default into your AppData (C:\Users\[Your Name]\AppData\Local\Tasklist).  Your AppData folder is hidden by default; if you want to see it, go to Control Panel, Folder Options, Show Hidden Files and Folders, and select "Show hidden files, folders and drives."   You should not install Tasklist in your Program Files Directory.  This is because Tasklist needs to save data files in the directory where is installed, and Windows may not allow it to store files in the Program Files directory.
